We’ve installed yellow bikes with yellow boxes of yellow flowers all over Otley to welcome and celebrate the Tour de France Grand Depart on 5th July. You’ll have seen the finished results so we thought you’d like to see some photos of us setting them up. On 25th May we put them on the roundabouts, before the Summer bedding was planted by the Parks Dept.

And the finished result:

And here’s the one outside HSBC being set up by Ian and Ernie, before Jacquie and Charlotte fixed on the flower basket.

One of our members spent a sunny afternoon adding some new plants to the Nectar Bed in Wharfefmeadows Park. The plants were ordered earlier in the year but had just arrived this week. The Nectar bed was given a good tidy-up and water as well and our member was pleased to receive several very positive comments from passers-by.

A couple of members of the group have again been back to the Whartons School where through recent talks with the school and Friends of the Earth it was decided that they would like to create two wildflower meadows within the school grounds. Over the past few months a plan was drawn up, seeds aquired and the land prepared. Finally today some of the children from the school enjoyed a sunny session of sowing the seeds and stamping the ground to settle them in assisted by our members. Otley in Bloom shared the costs of the groundworks with the school PTA and will continue to monitor the site.

Last year we arranged along with support from Otley Lions to have new planters put up in the bus station. The planters will be planted up twice a year for spring and summer to bring a little colour to one of our key entry points for visitors to Otley. We ordered a plaque earlier in the year to inform visitors and locals alike of who was responsible and we finally got it up in a prominent place this week.
